Posed family photos are not your thing? Well, you’re in the right place then.
But what can you photograph if you’re not being told what to do, where to stand and how to smile?
This article is for those families who don’t think their lives are exciting enough to be photographed without instructions.
Unless you’re new around here, you probably know that I’m a huge fan of documenting life as it happens – without interfering. That stays true for photographing my family clients as well as for my own life.
Last week, I finished my third year of project 365. I took one photo a day (well, usually it was way more than 1 photo) to curate the story of my year. Since my life isn’t very exciting most days, I had to get creative with what I captured. I wanted these images to tell me what I did that day, where I was or what was going on in my life.
This is what I ended up with:
Hopefully, you could see that not every single day was spectacular. In fast, most days were pretty ordinary. And that’s exactly the point – our lives are not just made of milestones but many many little moments that usually mean a lot more than the big ones.
So when you think about your life, try to not look for the celebrations, the big, life-changing moments but all those little ones in between. That’s what’s worth photographing.
Those are the things that make up your children’s memories and the things you remember in years to come. So let me share a few situations that could be photographed even if you didn’t think they were special enough now.
- Carrying your child – on a walk or during chores
- Exhausted parents with babies (because family life isn’t always just smiles and giggles)
- (Breast)feeding/nursing your baby
- Bedtime routine
- Bath time
- Your child’s favourite toy
- Reading their favourite book
- Grandparents visiting or helping
- Breakfast or dinner time
- Parents alone, without any children attached
- Crying or tantrums
These are just a few ideas. Your life is full of your own little routines and traditions that will shape how your children will remember their childhood. Having images of those moments doesn’t just help them explore their own identity but it can help you cope with life moving so fast.
So let me help you document all those moments that seem too ordinary to document for you. I promise you’ll cherish these images forever!
