Sometimes I get inquiries from parents who want some portraits of only their kids. I get it, they’re cute and they won’t stay like this forever.
But I don’t actually offer traditional family and children’s portraits. Because you can get those at school and nursery.
What I provide are moments of connection. Those photos aren’t constructed in a designated space, with a certain light and a specific pose. I document family life – the time you guys spend with each other.
Spending time with your kids often comes way too short because of work and chores and just life. The time you have with your little ones is precious and short.
So during a family photo session with me, you get to do the things you love to do together. Being crafty, playing games, exploring the world. Being imaginative develops your children’s senses and you get to be there with them. You don’t have to document it all because I can be there instead so you can be present.
A documentary family photo session is undisturbed family time – with a visitor who brings a camera. I understand that that sounds like a disruption or disturbance but I promise you that everyone, specifically your kids, will ignore my camera very quickly.
Because I don’t give instructions and I don’t ask for a photo. I just hang out with you and we don’t have to make a big deal about it.
Having someone around to photograph family time gives you the opportunity to cultivate hobbies, teach your kids skills and not be glued to your phone because you want to remember the moment. Let someone else handle that.
As parents, you have your hands full every day. It’s time to pass on a small part of all the responsibilities to another person, even if it’s just for a few hours.
Having photos of you playing with your kids will be worth more than having snapshots that you took yourself – because the photos will show your presence. That’s what your kids will remember in the future. And they’ll have the photos to go with those memories.
So, what are your favourite family activities?
