⛔ Everybody fails.

How do you feel about sharing the things that don’t go well?

It may seem uncomfortable but hear me out!

💬 We need to talk about our mistakes.

A story where everything goes smoothly is an anecdote. It can be entertaining but usually leaves us flat, wanting more.

Overcoming obstacles is a crucial element of telling a good story (and living life). Our life never goes to plan so when we hear that this happens to others too, we sympathise.

We feel seen.

💪This is why your failures have so much power. They connect us to the person next to us.

Failures and mistakes are a part of life and running a business. Success doesn’t come from everything always going well. It comes from making mistakes and learning from them.

When something goes wrong, I feel terrible. I feel like I’m the failure.

But a strange thing happens when I decide to talk about it: I get the most responses on my weekly emails or my Instagram stories when I share things that haven’t gone right.

🚫 Because I’m not the only one going through this.

Mistakes and failures are what connect us humans. And it’s always good to know we’re not the only ones struggling or messing up. Plus, we can learn from other people’s mistakes and how they deal with it.

“But Anja, we don’t like posing for photos! 😱😱”

Ok, you don’t like posing but you still want a family picture to hang on your wall? Or to give to grandma for Christmas?

Not a problem! You can have wall-worthy family photos, that don’t require awkward poses!

💛 Documentary family photography is completely unposed. 💛

🚫 I don’t tell you what to do, where to sit, what to wear or to pretend that you’re the happiest ever right in this moment.

The images we create will be moments that naturally happen without me telling you how to act.

✨ They are unique to your family, instead of being staged with the prompts and a formula that works for every family
✨ They are authentic, representing your special bond and connections with each other
no awkward posing required
✨ They can’t be recreated by someone else because they are a fragment of your family story

Now, when you think of family photos and are wondering whether it’s time to book a session – do you think the fear of looking awkward in a posed photo is going to hold you back?

❓Or will you trust me to create a unique portrait that doesn’t require you to follow instructions and make you feel conscious of how you might look?

By the way, while my family photo sessions are documentary-led, if you do want a standard, posed photo of everyone sitting or standing together, smiling at the camera – we can still do that ✅

It doesn’t ruin the integrity of your intention to capture the honest, real and unscripted story of your family life. It just means we’ll spend 5 minutes taking a traditional photo, that’s all.

You probably don’t love looking at yourself in p

You probably don’t love looking at yourself in photos*. Am I right?

Well, there’s a reason for that. And it’s not because you’re unphotogenic.

No, the reason why we are so judgemental when we look at images of ourselves is that most of us just don’t have enough of them. 🤷‍♀️

We don’t get photographed enough.

I’m not joking! 🚫

If we continuously see ourselves in photos, we get desensitised to them.

If you want to love yourself in images more – or even if you just want to have a neutral reaction to your pictures – have more of them! I promise, it works. 😉

➡️ In order to accept the way you look in photos is to just have more of them. ⬅️

The way you see yourself in a mirror is different to how someone else sees you – because the mirror is a reflection, an image is the opposite of that. So a photo will always look slightly “off”...

👶 You don’t want your kids to grow up scrutinising their bodies. But part of it is learnt behaviour and it’s on us to be positive role models for younger generations. And the most beautiful “side effect” of this desensitisation is confidence.

📷 Photography has a massive impact on self-worth – and it goes both ways. But my mission is to shift that into a positive reaction.

I do that by photographing you as you are the way I see you. It’s honest, it can be raw but it’s real. I’m not asking you to change the way you dress, move or act – I take you as I am and show you the beauty I see in you.

7 days of photographing life in Kathmandu. I still can’t find the right words…

What I do know though is that @streetwithmatt is an excellent teacher who took us on a photographic adventure through this fantastic city. He pushed us, inspired us and made us get up way too early most days 🤣 But the reward is a big gallery of images that without Matt, I wouldn’t have been able to create!
